How to Prepare for School Basketball Tryouts

School tryouts are often the first major test of a young athlete's basketball journey. Preparation goes far beyond just shooting hoops in the driveway.
What Coaches Commonly Evaluate
Most players believe coaches only look at who can score the most points. In reality, coaches are building a team, not just a collection of scorers. They evaluate:
- Conditioning: Can you run the floor without getting tired early?
- Basketball IQ: Do you understand spacing, defensive rotations, and shot selection?
- Game-speed decision-making: Can you make the right pass under pressure?
- Coachability: Do you look the coach in the eye, accept feedback, and immediately apply it?
- Communication: Are you talking on defense and encouraging teammates?
- Defense and effort: Are you willing to do the dirty work, dive for loose balls, and box out?
Preparation Timeline
Don't wait until the week of tryouts to start getting ready. A proper preparation timeline should begin months in advance. Focus on consistent skill repetition and conditioning so that by the time tryouts arrive, you are simply showcasing what you already do naturally.
Tryout-Day Checklist
- Arrive at least 15 minutes early to stretch and get shots up.
- Bring your own water bottle and wear proper athletic gear.
- Introduce yourself to the coaches if you haven't met them.
- Hustle between every drill—never walk on the court.
